BMI Calculator - Body Mass Index

The BMI calculator is an effective tool to determine if you are overweight, underweight, or just right. Your weight alone is not enough to know, as tall, thin men is likely to weigh more a short but rotund woman. It is the BMI that measures your body's mass. also known as BMI, overcomes this problem by finding a ratio of your weight to height, and returning only one number. This number will fit into an area on the scale of BMIranges, which are classified as underweight normal, overweight and obese.

To work out your body mass index on your own and understand what it indicates for you, you'll have to know:

  • How do I calculate BMI.
  • What's the normal BMI.
  • What are the various BMI ranges are.

How to calculate BMI

First, let's cover the math:

  1. You can divide the weight (in kgs) per your size (in inches).
  2. Divide the answer by your height and again to get your BMI.

So the formula for body mass index is as like:

BMI = weight/height2.

Normal BMI

Our BMI calculator is easy to determine your number. Please note that BMI is a rough estimation. The result can be somewhat misleading for individuals who are well muscled (such as bodybuilders), or for those who have lost a significant amount of muscle (such as the elderly).

If you're uncertain whether or not you fall inside what is considered to be the "normal" range of muscle mass, consider using one of our more specialized calculators. The body fat calculator can zero-in on your percentage of body fat. In addition, our body mass calculator for lean can give you an estimate of how much you'd weigh with no fat.

BMI ranges

There are five basic areas within the BMI scale:

  • Weight = less than 18.5
  • Normal weight equals 18.5 - 24.9
  • Overweight = 25 - 29.9
  • Obesity = 30 - 35
  • Severe Obesity = 35 and more

It's called the BMI Prime provides a clever variation to our BMI calculator. It's a decimal number where 1.0 is the highest point in within the "normal BMI" range. It's an extremely simple method to find out if you're overweight or not. If the BMI Prime is greater than 1, you've got some pounds to shed.

Utilizing our calculator to calculate the Body Mass Index

At the top of the BMI calculator, there are fields for you to input your height and weight. Enter these numbers, and you'll instantly have your BMI and your BMI (see above) (see above) along with a small message telling you what the range of values you fall within.

If you're overweight and wish to know how much you'll have to lose to move into your healthyrange If you want to know the exact amount you need to lose, you are able to do so too. Place your height and weight in the boxes as they are, and then type "0.9" into the BMI Prime box. Weight and BMI will adjust themselves.

Tips: If your height box adjusts itself as you alter other boxes, you'll need to make sure you lock it. Go to the right side of the box, and then click the lock icon. This will secure the figure while you experiment with the numbers in other boxes. That is... unless you're planning to grow taller!

Other considerations

If you're interested in knowing if your metabolism is on the right track in the pursuit of being at a healthy weight, you can use using our calculator for basal metabolic rates (or its variation with the Harris-Benedict equation). It's common to hear about events which can increase or decrease our metabolism (which does skipping breakfast will do?) We don't hear a lot about analyzing the effects of these changes. That's exactly what this calculator is for.

The basal metabolic rate of your body is the rate at which you are able to measure your body's metabolism when you wake up in the morning. In this is most accurate time of the day to assess your metabolism because it's too early to heat you up yet!

Once you know how you can calculate BMI, the next logical figure to know is the ideal weight. Utilize this ideal tool to find this quickly.
